Best HRV Apps in 2026: Watch, Camera or Chest Strap

The best HRV app depends on how you want to measure. If you wear an Apple Watch, pick an app that reads its overnight HRV and compares it with your baseline (Athlytic $29.99 a year, Bevel or Bodly free to start). With no wearable, HRV4Training ($9.99 once) measures through your phone's camera. For the most accurate morning reading, use a Bluetooth chest strap with Elite HRV or Kubios HRV, both free.

HRV (heart rate variability) is the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher than your own normal usually means you are recovered; lower usually means stress, illness, poor sleep or hard training. The method matters more than the app, so this guide starts there.

Three ways to measure HRV

Method How it works Accuracy Effort Apps
Smartwatch, ring or band Measures automatically during sleep Good to excellent, varies by device None Athlytic, Bevel, Bodly (Apple Watch); Oura, WHOOP (own apps)
Phone camera Fingertip over the camera for 1 to 5 minutes Good at rest Daily morning reading HRV4Training, Welltory
Chest strap or finger sensor Bluetooth sensor records each beat Best outside a lab Daily reading plus a sensor Elite HRV, Kubios HRV

Overnight measurement is the most practical. It needs no routine, and sleep is when your body is most comparable from one day to the next. A morning reading with a strap or camera is more controlled, but only works if you do it the same way every day.

How accurate is each method?

Validation studies have tested all three against an ECG, the clinical reference.

Device or method Study Agreement with ECG
Phone camera (HRV4Training) 2017, 29 people at rest Trivial differences, correlation 1.00
Oura Ring Gen 4 2025, 536 nights Concordance 0.99, average error 6.0%
WHOOP 4.0 2025, 536 nights Concordance 0.94, average error 8.2%
Garmin Fenix 6 2025, 536 nights Concordance 0.87, average error 10.5%
Apple Watch Series 6 2022 sleep lab Intraclass correlation 0.67 (good)

Three things to keep in mind. The camera study measured people sitting still for five minutes, and one author founded HRV4Training, the app tested. The Apple Watch result is for an older Series 6, compared across the whole night with the ECG; newer watches sample HRV far more often. And for recovery, what matters is that one device is consistent with itself, because you compare today with your own baseline, not with anyone else.

The best HRV apps

App Measures with US price (App Store, October 2026) Best for
Athlytic Apple Watch Free download; Pro $29.99 a year or $4.99 a month WHOOP-style recovery from Apple Watch
Bevel Apple Watch and other wearables Free scores; Pro $99.99 a year A polished all-in-one Apple Watch app
Bodly Apple Watch Free to download HRV with sleep, strain, food and body tracking
HRV4Training Phone camera or chest strap $9.99 once Athletes who want a morning reading without a wearable
Elite HRV Chest strap or finger sensor Free; extras from $0.99 A free, structured morning routine
Kubios HRV Chest strap (accelerometer mode in beta) Free The most detailed HRV analysis
Welltory Phone camera or wearables Free download; Premium $99.99 to $119.99 a year Stress and energy insights

Athlytic: recovery from your Apple Watch

Athlytic reads HRV and resting heart rate from Apple Health and turns them into a recovery score with strain and sleep alongside. It needs an Apple Watch (or a wearable that writes HRV to Apple Health) for most features. Pro is $29.99 a year.

Bevel: the polished all-rounder

Bevel builds recovery, strain, sleep and an energy score from your Apple Watch, with food and strength training in the same app. The core scores are free; Pro costs $99.99 a year. Our Bevel review covers what is free and what we noticed using it daily.

Bodly: HRV in context

Bodly reads your Apple Watch's overnight HRV and resting heart rate and scores recovery against your own baseline, next to sleep, strain, stress and energy. It also tracks food, weight, measurements and progress photos, which helps when you want to see whether a low-HRV week lines up with poor sleep, a hard training block or a calorie deficit.

HRV4Training: no wearable needed

HRV4Training measures HRV with your phone's camera (fingertip over the lens) or a Bluetooth chest strap, in a morning reading of one to five minutes. It costs $9.99 once and is popular with endurance athletes. Note that its developer says the Apple Watch cannot be used for its own HRV analysis, because the watch does not share beat-to-beat data.

Elite HRV: free morning readings with a sensor

Elite HRV guides a short morning reading with a chest strap or finger sensor and tracks your readiness over time. It is free; the in-app purchases are small extras. You will need a compatible sensor; it does not use the Apple Watch.

Kubios HRV: the most detailed analysis

Kubios comes from the makers of the HRV analysis software used in research. The free app pairs with a Bluetooth heart rate sensor such as the Polar H10 for a morning readiness reading, and recently added an accelerometer-based mode in beta.

Welltory: stress and energy

Welltory measures HRV through the camera or a wearable and frames it as stress and energy. The free version is limited; Premium costs $99.99 to $119.99 a year, with a lifetime option.

How to get a useful HRV number

  1. Measure the same way every time. Overnight from a watch, or every morning in the same position, before coffee.
  2. Compare with yourself. A 7-day average against your 30 to 60-day baseline means more than any single reading.
  3. Do not mix formulas. SDNN (most Apple Watches) and RMSSD (most apps and wearables) differ; Apple Watch HRV explains why.
  4. Read it alongside sleep and training. One low day is noise; three low days with poor sleep is a signal.

A note on health

HRV is a training and recovery signal, not a diagnosis. A sudden, lasting drop together with symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness or dizziness is a reason to see a doctor, not to adjust your training.

How we picked these apps

We included the HRV apps people search for most, across the three measurement methods, and checked each one's US App Store listing for price and how it measures HRV on October 27, 2026. Accuracy figures come from independent validation studies, listed below. Bodly is our own app.
