A weekly review that takes five minutes

The daily number is tactical. The weekly pattern is where the value is. Once a week, look at:

That fourth point is the one that separates a hard training block from a hole you're digging. A block should have some days ending at zero. A month of them shouldn't.

How Accurate Is Body Battery?

The honest answer has two halves.

The inputs are reasonably good. Overnight HRV, resting heart rate, sleep duration, and movement are all measured acceptably well on a wrist during sleep, when you're still and the sensor has a clean read. Sleep staging is the weakest link - consumer wearables agree with polysomnography on roughly 60-80% of epochs, and they systematically overestimate deep sleep in some people.

The model is proprietary and unvalidated externally. Garmin and Firstbeat have not published the weightings, and there's no independent literature establishing that a Body Battery of 70 corresponds to any specific physiological state. It is an internally consistent index, not a measurement.

What this means practically:

  • Direction is trustworthy. If your number drops, something real changed.
  • Magnitude is approximate. The difference between 68 and 74 is noise.
  • Cross-person comparison is meaningless. The scale isn't anchored to anything shared.
  • Your own history is the only valid reference. Two weeks of baseline data before you draw conclusions.

That's not a criticism unique to Garmin. Every recovery score on the market - WHOOP, Oura, Samsung, Polar - has the same structure: decent inputs, a proprietary and unpublished model on top.

Troubleshooting Common Body Battery Problems

"It's always high, even when I feel terrible." Check band fit overnight. A loose band gives poor HRV data, and poor HRV data tends to produce falsely optimistic charging. Also check that you're actually wearing it through the night, not charging it then.

"It never gets above 60." Look at total sleep first, then alcohol, then sleep timing. If all three are fine and it's been weeks, consider training load or an aggressive calorie deficit. Chronic under-eating suppresses HRV and caps the ceiling reliably.

"It drains to zero by noon." Usually a genuinely elevated stress score, which usually means life stress or illness. Occasionally it's caffeine intake earlier than you'd think.

"It didn't charge at all overnight." Either the watch didn't detect sleep (check that sleep windows are set in Garmin Connect), or it was off your wrist, or you drank. Check the sleep tab first.

"It disagrees with how I feel." Both can be right. The number reflects autonomic state, which is not the same thing as motivation, mood, or soreness. Delayed onset muscle soreness in particular does not show up in Body Battery at all.

Put Energy in Context

A recovery number alone doesn't tell you much. Waking at 45 means something completely different in a month where you're in a calorie deficit, sleeping badly, and adding training volume than it does after a single late night.
